What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is how you get your content quoted by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews — not just ranked on a search results page.

The 30-second definition

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that answer engines can extract a clean, quotable response and cite your site as the source. Where SEO tries to win a click from a list of ten blue links, AEO tries to win the answer itself.

How AEO differs from traditional SEO

  • Goal: SEO targets rankings. AEO targets citations.
  • Format: SEO rewards long, in-depth pages. AEO rewards short, self-contained answers near the top of each page.
  • Signals: SEO is keywords + links. AEO adds structured data, semantic clarity, and third-party citations across the web.
  • Measurement: SEO tracks position and traffic. AEO tracks "are we in the AI Overview / Perplexity citation list for this query?"

The good news: they reinforce each other. Pages that win AI citations almost always already rank well in traditional search.

The 5 things every UK business should do for AEO

  1. Write a clear, quotable definition at the top of every key page. 40–60 words that an AI could lift directly.
  2. Add FAQ schema to your service and product pages. Real questions, real answers, marked up properly.
  3. Build comparison and "best of" content. "X vs Y" and "best X in the UK" pages are disproportionately quoted by generative AI.
  4. Earn third-party mentions. AI engines weight Reddit threads, industry roundups and review sites heavily when forming recommendations.
  5. Publish an llms.txt file at your site root, and keep your HTML semantic so crawlers can parse you cheaply.

How to know if it's working

Start tracking three things monthly: (1) does your brand appear in Google AI Overviews for your core commercial queries; (2) are you cited in Perplexity / ChatGPT answers for those queries; (3) is your branded search volume rising. If all three trend up, AEO is paying back. If only #3 is rising, you're getting attention but no clicks — usually a sign your content needs sharper hooks.

Should you start now?

Yes. Roughly 60% of Google searches in 2026 already end without a click — the user got their answer in the AI Overview. The brands building AEO equity now will own the citation slots when their competitors finally notice. It's the cheapest moat available in search marketing right now.
